Christmas festival helps branding of Westport

Spraoi na Nollaig will once again take place in Westport this Christmas following its successful debut last year and in the process will add to the growing calendar of events in the town, it was announced at the town council’s October meeting.

Town clerk Ann Moore added that there had been positive feedback from the recent arts festival while Councillor Michael McLaughlin also commended it as a great success.

At present the town council is working with the organisers of the Sea2Summit adventure race, taking place in November. Ms Moore said that this festival, along with other such festivals, will ensure that “Westport is the branded the adventure capital of the country.”

Cllr Christy Hyland, who at the last meeting proposed that the town hosts the Fleadh Cheoil, said that he still wants to proceed “gung-ho” with the plan. Cllr Hyland was informed that communication has been sent to the local Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann branch. The Fine Gael councillor also wished Ballina well in its submission to host the music event as, if any town in Mayo hosts it “it is revenue to the west of Ireland”, he said.

It was proposed by Cllr Brendan Mulroy that a fleadh cheoil committee be set up, which was seconded by Cllr Myles Staunton.
