Emergency services deal with two serious incidents

The county’s emergency services dealt with two serious incidents in the county over the past few days — the tragic death of a pensioner from burn injuries and the rescue of two men from a boat on Lough Mask.

On Tuesday night an elderly disabled man from Gortnagur, near Kilmaine, died following a tragic accident at his home.

The emergency services were called by a family member to the home of 79-year-old Martin Walsh. The body of Mr Walsh, who lived alone, was discovered with burn injuries.

The deceased’s body was brought to Mayo General Hospital where a post mortem was carried out.

Mr Walsh will be laid to rest today (Friday ) at 12 noon from St Patrick’s Church, Kilmaine, with the funeral proceeding to the new cemetery. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

On Wednesday night, a father and son were rescued from Lough Mask on Wednesday night after a rented boat which they had hired got stranded on jagged rocks in the lake.

The 84-year-old Englishman and his 41-year-old son had taken the boat out on to the lake at around 9.30am on Wednesday. After they failed to return to shore the boat owner raised the alarm. At around 10pm that night a Coast Guard helicopter which had been deployed rescued the men from their vessel.

They were brought ashore at Tourmakeady, where they received medical attention.
