Eye tests and glasses for Chernobyl children

A group of children living with the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster are to receive free eyecare from Specsavers in Castlebar during a respite holiday in Ireland.

Staff from Specsavers in Hopkins Road Shopping Centre will be offering their time and expertise to 16 children associated with the Chernobyl Orphans Fund over the next two weeks.

The children, who are staying with local host families in and around the Mayo area, will be offered a complimentary eye examination in the store, and any who need glasses will be provided, completely free of charge.

Tisha Gallagher, director of the Chernobyl Orphans Fund stated: ‘We are thrilled Specsavers in Castlebar will be offering much needed eyecare to the Chernobyl children we care for locally. Proper eyecare is an area often neglected for these children, who live with poverty on a daily basis, and for most of them, this will be their first ever eye test.’

Specsavers Castlebar store director Niamh O'Connell said the company was aware of the need for proper eyecare among the children and happy to be able to do something to help.

“We have been offering our expertise and support to the Chernobyl children for a number of years now and hope the eyecare provided will enhance these children’s quality of life.’
