Man with no licence drove drunk

A Ballina man who failed the theory test, yet drove his uninsured car while drunk, was before Ballina District Court this week.

On July 11 at 9.07pm, Garda Brian Fowley stopped James Maughan, 13 The Commons, Ballina on Teeling Street, Ballina, after he drove through a red light. Maughan was arrested for drink driving and a breath sample provided showed 88mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

The uninsured man who had a Scottish provisional licence, has no previous convictions. For drink driving, Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined him €750 and disqualified him from driving for three years. For not having insurance, Maughan was convicted and fined €600 and disqualified for one year concurrent, and for not having a driving licence he was convicted and fined €50.
