Westport allotments talk

Michael Fox, prominent allotments campaigner and chairman of the south Dublin Allotments Association, will address a public meeting organised by the Westport Allotments Association on February 19. The meeting will be held at the Wyatt Hotel and begin at 8pm sharp.

Mr Fox’s talk will outline the processes by which municipal allotments can successfully be developed, and the respective roles of municipal authorities and local allotments groups. The talk will be accompanied by slides of existing municipal allotments in different parts of Ireland.

The talk will be followed by a more general discussion on progress to date in the establishment of long term municipal allotments in the Westport town area.

Andy Wilson, secretary of the Westport Allotments Association, said the Westport group were very pleased that Mr Fox was coming to talk in Westport.

“I think we need to keep up the momentum here. Although the town council has now - to its credit - included provision of municipal allotments in the latest draft development plan, we really want to see allotments in Westport happen this year. When things drag on, the momentum is lost and people lose interest or make alternative arrangements. This could be a first for Westport, for Mayo, and possibly for Connacht. It would be a real pity if people can't get crops in the ground this year.”
