Achill sewerage scheme almost complete

The news that the Achill Sound Sewerage scheme is almost complete and should be open by the summer was greeted with delight at the Belmullet electoral area meeting this week. The members were told that the work was currently about 85 per cent complete, that all the pipes should be laid by March, that four of the five pumping stations were under advanced stages of construction, and the treatment plant is coming along well.

“I’m delighted to hear that the Sound sewerage scheme will be operational by summer,” Achill based Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael McNamara told the meeting. “It’s a great development for the area. But there is one thing I’d like to see done when all the reinsertion works are complete, and that’s the road surface. It badly needs to be redone and this is the perfect time to do a proper job on it. We were told in the past we had to wait until the sewerage scheme was done, well that’s coming to completion and now would be the perfect time to do it.”

Director of services for the area Peter Hynes told the meeting: “We always take the opportunity when we do major work to leave it in a better way than we found it and we intend to here as well. It will be more of a challenge this year than other years but we will do our best.”
