Our Lady’s Belmullet present Chicago

Song, dance, drama, and suspense. These are only some of the luxuries you can expect from Chicago, the musical, courtesy of the transition year students of Our Lady’s Secondary School, Belmullet. The students have been working vigorously with the help of teachers Mr Mc Nally their musical director, Mr Slater their stage director and vocal tutor, Mr Chambers their musical supervisor and Mrs Boyce their choreographer for this fantastic production.

The musical Chicago is set in the 1920s in Chicago. Roxie Hart (Aisling Cafferkey ) is the ditzy wife of mechanic Amos Hart (Pearse Holmes ). Roxie is a chorus girl whose heart is set on entering the world of showbusiness. After the murder of Fred Casely (the man she was having an affair with ), Roxie finds herself in Cooke County jail where she meets the infamous Velma Kelly (Debra Doherty ), another chorus girl who was accused of the murder of her sister and husband. She also meets the head matron of Cooke County jail, Matron Mama Morton (Molly Sidiakina ). While in jail, Roxie learns of the most successful lawyer in all of Illinois, Billy Flynn (John Joe Gallagher ) and soon persuades him to take her case. After many press conferences and meetings, Roxie Hart soon becomes an in-jail celebrity, highlighting her talent in song and dance, which does not amuse Velma Kelly as Roxie is taking her limelight and her lawyer. As promised Roxie Hart wins her case but to her surprise her fleeting affair with stardom soon ends. As both Velma and Roxie have no spotlight in the media they decide to headline together.

Throw in puppet dances, large amounts of red lipstick, sparkly dresses, feather boas, and a song list to die for and the end result is a musical that will excite and delight an audience of any age.

The curtains rise on Chicago at 8pm sharp on Thursday January 28, Friday January 29 and Saturday January 30. Admission to this musical spectacular is €12 for adults and €8 for students.
