Man who drove to get glasses is off the road

A man from Westport who while disqualified from driving was detected driving in Castlebar in September of this year was before Judge David Anderson at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.

The court heard that on September 16 at 11.15am Alan Treacy, Mace, Aughagower, Westport, was observed driving a white Honda Civic by Garda Owen O’Donnell at Springfield Castlebar. The garda noticed that there was no valid documentation displayed. The defendant had no licence or insurance and the tax was out of date since June 2007. Treacy also informed the garda that he was disqualified from driving.

Solicitor Patrick Durcan said that the man had not driven since his disqualification until that day as he had to go into town to collect spectacles which he urgently needed.

Treacy, who works part time at a waste disposal company and who lives at home with his parents, was convicted and fined €750 and disqualified from driving for two years.
