Club competitions to the fore around Mayo

Balla

The stroke play competition last weekend was sponsored by Marian and Ted Gormally, Hennelly’s Bar, Manulla. The winner of the men’s competition was Pat Walsh with a 52, Oliver Moran came second with a score of 54, and third place went to Joe Monaghan with a score off 55 (back six ), the gross prize went to Pat Jordan for his score of 58. The ladies’ competition saw Marie Flanagan come out on top with a score of 52 , she was two ahead of Mary Gillard in second place. The third place prize went to Mary Brett who scored 55, and Audrey Holian won the youths’ section.

Marie Flanagan beat Pat Walsh on the Back 9 to win the Balla Cup for the second year in succession. Congratulations also to Seamus Holian who got a hole in one on the 14th. Next week’s competition is a Rumble sponsored by Butler Foods. Three people per team — first six holes one score counts, second six holes two scores count, last six holes all three scores count.

The scramble sponsored by Aodan Mac Suibhne saw the team of Noel Healy, Cora Waldron, and Dave McHale take the win. In second place were Jimmy Sheridan, Carmel O’Brien, and Marie Flanagan. The bronze medal was won by Kathleen Minogue, Marie Cresham, and Michael Miller. Cora Waldron got nearest the pin on the 17th for her team. This week’s scramble is sponsored by Padraig and Rosaleen Warde, The Lough Inn, Partry, and is the last scramble this season. A card game will take place in the clubhouse after the golf — refreshments will be served.

Ballina

The 18 hole singles competition last weekend was won by R McGinty with a score of 43pts, he was one ahead of R McHale in second place on 42pts the same as third place finisher P Hopkins. The 18 hole open competition saw J Cunningham take first place with 34, T Kirean on 32, and K Cunningham finished with 31 in third.

The seniors captain’s prize was won by M O’Malley with a score of 31 and S Rowley came third with a 29.

Ballyhaunis

Paul Finnegan won the junior section of the Stableford competition with a score of 38 off 18. The ladies’ section was won by Marge Hierons with a 38, just one shot ahead of Norrie Dillon in second place who was two ahead of third place Fiona Prenty who went round in 35. Pat Curley’s good performance on the back nine saw him come first in the gents’ section ahead of Tom Moran which saw both men finish with a score of 38. Only one point further back was third placed Aiden Fitzmaurice

Claremorris

The Hennigans Centra, Ballindine, competition saw Mike McNamara win with 43pts. Matt O’Donovan won the Cat 1 prize with a score of 42 points, the Cat 2 Paul Biggins was won by Paul Biggins with a score of 41, and the Cat 3 competition went Padraic McHugh who also scored 41. The ladies’ competition was won by Nancy McHugh who scored 38 pts, Emma Prenty came second also on 38 pts, and Mary Walsh finished in third place on 37 points.

Westport Golf

Shane Golden was the winner of last weekend’s competition with a score of 41pts off 26 last weekend. He finished two points ahead of Tony Bree in second place with Robbie Flynn taking third spot also two behind. Jack Healy finished in fourth spot on 38pts with Shane Larkin taking the gross prize with a score of 32pts of 2.

Blane Lynch was the winner of the Cat 1 competition with a score of 36pts off 12, the Cat 2 competition was won by Neil Chambers who hit 38pts off 12, with John Cox taking the Cat 3 competition with a score of 38pts off 18.
