His Serene Highness, Albert, Prince of Monaco made an official visit to Newport, last week where he unveiled a specially commissioned sculpture of his mother, Princess Grace of Monaco.

The sculpture, created by Mayo sculptor Mark Rode, is situated on Castlebar Street at the entrance to Newport’s landmark seven arch bridge. Newport Business Association commissioned the statue of Princess Grace as part of its ongoing initiative to celebrate Newport as “The Town of the Two Graces” - Grainne Uaile from the 16th century and Grace Kelly from the 20th century, who both have such strong links with the town. Grace Kelly’s family is from Drimurla, just outside the town.

The statue of Grainne Uaile will be unveiled next year. Mark Rode, a talented sculptor who works from his studio in Kilasser, near Swinford, was commissioned to create this tribute to Princess Grace. Mark is well-known throughout Ireland for his work that includes The Barack Obama bust in Moneygall, The Quiet Man statue in Cong, and the Titanic Memorial in Addergoole, County Mayo.

HSH Prince Albert has been involved in the process from the beginning, personally selecting the final image for the sculpture of Princess Grace.

Mary Keane, Chair of the Newport Business Association, said this is a great occasion and marks the start of a new chapter for a thriving Newport.

"We are moving forward with confidence, thanks to the resilience and energy of the great people we have here, and who are building upon the achievements of our emigrant families and the legacy of history. These statues will ensure that future generations will continue to acknowledge and be inspired by these two iconic Graces.”

HSH Prince Albert was accompanied by his cousin, JB Kelly, extended Kelly family members, and representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs. Gifts were presented to him to mark the occasion including a Newport 300 book and an ‘Eire’ throw from Foxford Woollen Mills.

Two specially commissioned jerseys were also given to His Serene Highness for his twins, Jacques and Gabriella, from the local Burrishoole GAA team. Following the unveiling, the Prince attended a reception in Hotel Newport, where he enjoyed cocktails by Grace O’Malley Spirits and entertainment from local musicians.
