Young playwrights take centre stage at Linenhall Showcase

Fighting Words Mayo and The Linenhall Arts Centre are thoroughly excited to announce that a ‘Young Playwrights’ showcase will take place on Sunday, May 22, at The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar.

This upcoming, free theatre event features five engaging duologues written by Aisling Cresham, Eva Garayalde, Muiris Ó Clochartaigh, Jack Reynolds and Joe Reidy. Their words, performed by a cast of professional actors, are directed by Cathal Cleary & Catherine Denning.

Throughout the spring, The Linenhall Arts Centre and Fighting Words Mayo mentored a group of young writers. Teenagers from across the county came together to learn about the art, craft, and mechanics of playwriting. In each workshop, the art form was explored with a focus on character building, scene-work, dialogue, improvisations, live writing, observation exercises, and stagecraft.

Deirdre Melvin, Arts Access Officer at the Linenhall, explained: "The project began in the New Year when Covid-19 restrictions were ever-changing and uncertain. I have to commend our young writers who demonstrated a remarkable level of dedication and professionalism.

"They have created new plays that are both engrossing and entertaining. It has been a privilege to work with the Fighting Words Mayo mentors - Ken Armstrong; Ernestine Duffy; Laura Killeen and Paul Soye. We think there is something for everyone to enjoy at this live event."

These new short plays, performed by a cast of professional actors are directed by Castlebar’s Catherine Denning, who is Galway based and works with theatre companies such as Branar, Brú Theatre, Fíbín, Telegael, Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe and Decadent, and Cathal Cleary, an award-winning director who has worked for the Young Vic, The Abbey Theatre, Druid and Donmar Warehouse amongst others.

The Linenhall Arts Centre is thrilled with the calibre of young Mayo talent, and the directors and actors involved think you will be too! Tickets are available now. The event is free and part-supported by Creative Ireland Mayo. To book, for enquiries, or for more information, telephone box office (094 ) 902 3733 or visit www.thelinenhall.com
