New Opel Astra on the way, including electric version

Opel has unveiled the sixth generation of its Astra, which for the first time will be available as fully electric.

The new Astra is due in Ireland in early 2022, with prices and equipment levels announced closer to launch, while the Astra Sports Tourer estate version will follow here shortly after.

Complementing the petrol and diesel powertrains, Opel will offer the new Astra as a plug-in hybrid in two performance levels, and then from 2023 as a battery all-electric emissions-free Astra-e.

The latest Astra sports the brand’s new face, the Opel Vizor and features a fully digital pure panel cockpit interior and top technologies such as the adaptive Intelli-Lux LED pixel lighting system, which comes straight from Opel’s flagship Insignia.

Opel boasts that the new Astra’s in-house developed front seats are AGR certified and are “exceedingly comfortable”, especially on long journeys.

The new model is 4mm longer than its 2015 predecessor, and has a 267.5cm wheelbase. Boot space is 1,250 litres with the rear seats folded down, Opel says.

Speaking at the world premiere, Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz says it is a "fantastic car".

"The new Astra will open an exciting new chapter in the history of Opel compact class models. This will be the first time we offer both a battery-electric and a plug-in hybrid version of the same model.

"I am confident the new Astra and Astra-e will make a powerful impression and attract many new customers to the brand. Opel sets standards with this car, which has everything it takes to once again become a bestseller."

Opel brand ambassador Jürgen Klopp described his first impressions from a pre-production vehicle. "I had the chance to drive a camouflaged Astra plug-in hybrid - really very impressive. Quiet and powerful at the same time, the handling almost like a sports car. And the design: bold, innovative, creative. Well done Opel."
