No increase proposed in LPT for next year

The elected members of Mayo County Council will meet on Monday to discuss the Local Property Tax (LPT ) structure for next year in the county.

Last year the councillors agreed to a ten per cent increase in the LPT which saw 24,000 households, with properties valued at under €100,000, in Mayo, having to pay an additional €9 per annum in Property Tax, while those with properties valued between €100,000 and €150,000 were subject to an extra €22.50 on the tax.

The increase in the LPT last year was estimated to bring in an extra €1 million in revenue and was ring fenced by the elected members, with €800,000 allocated for match funding for projects where grant funding was available to councillors, and €200,000 for verge cutting across the county.

However, council management, in a memo to councillors before next week's meeting, proposed that there would be no increase in the LPT for 2022 and it would be maintained at the 2021 level.

The council advertised for submissions from members of the public on the LPT and only received two such submissions before the time deadline. Both submissions received were against any increase in the LPT going forward.

In its briefing document to councillors, council management outlined that they expected to collect €10,460,909 in LPT income in 2022, with 80 per cent of that being retained locally (€8,368,727 ) and they would also receive €11,443,617 from the national equalisation fund from LPT nationally, to give them a total of €19,812,344.
