Ballina legends McHale and Marsh team up one more time

Ballina sporting legends Liam McHale and Deora Marsh are set to team up one more time for a novel engagement – a public interview at an online event hosted by the local Stephenites GAA Club and the Western Region Drugs and Alcohol Task Force (WRDATF ).

The pair, who starred together on numerous occasions on the basketball court, will look back on their careers at the free Zoom event on Wednesday, November 18, at 7pm, ‘doors’ open at 6.50pm.

The interview, conducted by journalist and broadcaster Liam Horan, will form the centrepiece of an Oíche an Chlub & Success in Sport Webinar that will also focus on Stephenites’ sterling efforts in the GAA’s Healthy Club Project.

Fran Downey, Ballina Stephenites Healthy Club Officer explained: "To showcase the benefit of a healthy and active lifestyle, you couldn’t get better people than Liam and Deora, who shone on the national stage for Ballina – both as basketballers, and Liam as one of the greatest Gaelic footballers Ballina and Mayo has ever produced. They will talk about their careers – the highs and the lows, the good days and the bad.

"We will have a number of other special guests too, including All-Star footballer Rachel Kearns; former Leitrim footballer Colin Regan, now the GAA’s Community & Health Manager; former Mayo footballer Niall Dunne, Chairperson, Mayo GAA Health & Wellbeing Committee and Manager, Mayo Mental Health Association; and one or two more who will be announced closer to the time.

"We will outline the many great events we have held under our Healthy Club Project. This project has generated huge interest in the Ballina area. We are more than just a club for competitive sport – we’re a community organisation and are delighted to run events that attract people who may never have been involved with the club before."

Pat Conway, WRDATF, said he was delighted to team up with a progressive club like Ballina Stephenites for this event. “This is one of the major items on the calendar for our annual Drugs and Alcohol Awareness Week, and certainly transmits the key message of the value of a healthy lifestyle.

"Liam, Deora, Rachel and our other guests are all great role models and people of all ages will benefit from hearing what they have to say – as well as enjoying their stories from their careers,” he added. To register for the event, email [email protected].
