O'Malley thinks council is getting ripped off on Japanese knotweed eradication programme

Independent Cllr Johno O'Malley has queried how much the council is spending yearly on its Japanese knotweed eradication programme.

He asked: "How much do Mayo County Council spend on bringing in a company to inject Japanese knotweed? I want to know because I know that it is a pure farce, no need at all to bring in a company - it can be sprayed one spray and gone to the root forever and I think the company are ripping you off."

Director of services for Mayo County Council, Tom Gilligan, refuted Cllr O'Malley's claim saying: "The last two years we have a budget of €75,000, it is not enough, we have a serious issue. We do go to tender, there is a protocol and criteria that has to go through, I wish there was more there in the budget to go through it."
