Downpatrick Water Scheme approved - Mulherin

Senator Michelle Mulherin has confirmed that funding has been approved for the Downpatrick Head Group Water Scheme which will bring a clean water supply to 17 families.

Senator Mulherin said: “I received confirmation from the Eoghan Murphny, Housing, Planning and Local Government, that the new application meets the criteria and has been approved on foot of a revised application submitted by Mayo County Council.

“This is wonderful news for the residents of Downpatrick Head who have had to endure a long wait for a proper water supply and were refused funding under the Multi-annual Rural Water Programme 2019-2021 because of the cost per unit exceeding €9,000 per house.

“I have stood alongside the Downpatrick Head residents every step of the way and fought for this scheme; most recently when I highlighted their plight in the Seanad and brought their case directly to the door of Minister Murphy.

“Minister Murphy in his correspondence to me today (Thursday ) said:

“I further understand that Downpatrick Head is to receive funding given its importance. However, this cannot be finalised until after the General Election.

“At this time, Fine Gael will work quickly to complete any outstanding details in relation to this scheme so the necessary funding can be provided and work can get underway as soon as possible.”

Senator Mulherin addded: “I am delighted for the families of Downpatrick Head and I can assure them of my continued support if I am elected to Dáil Eireann in making sure that this scheme is completed without any further delay.”
