Mayo get year off to winning start in the capital

Volleyball; Mayo Volleyball Club 3 Tallaght Guardians 1

Mayo Volleyball club got 2020 off to a perfect start with an impressive 3-1 away win against Tallaght Guardians.

The ladies from the west started with a bang as they accumulated a large lead from the off. Guardians leading attackers struggled with the remarkable blocking of Edel Nolan while Aisling Croughan, also from Claremorris, racked up many scores from some excellent serves.

Although they narrowed the gap later on, Mayo were too far ahead, winning 25-17.The second set started like the first as Mayo built another good lead. The Dublin side changed tact, aiming to tip their balls over rather than spiking, but Hilde Kneblewski showed great anticipation, saving the Mayo ladies several times.

Ruthless hitting from Edel Nolan ended the set as a contest as Mayo won 25-18. The Dublin outfit found their rhythm taking advantage of an error-strewn set by the red and green. Despite a late charge by the away side, Tallaght Guardians won 25-23.

The fourth set proved to be the final set however as the Mayo side put their previous set behind them. Both sides exchanged many points, keeping scores tight, but at the latter stages Mayo won many points form the serves of Mikal O'Boyle, winning the set 25-18 and the match 3-1. Mayo travel to Dublin again on Sunday to play Santry at 5.30pm.
