Castlebar ladies’ golf results

The good weather saw a large number of ladies take to the fairways at the weekend in the qualifying round for the Rocky's matchplay competition. Some mighty scores came in and none better than that of 44pts by Kate Killilea. Evelyn Brady came a close second with 42pts while Sheila Baynes won the gross with a great 40pts. In third place was Ann Gallagher with 38pts. Well done to all and the list for the match play competition should be on the notice board this week.

Next weekend is the captain's drive-in plus the presentation of all the Spring League prizes. Hope to see you all there.

Winter league final

Many famous venues have staged historic sporting occasions; Ali and Frazier at the Garden, Brazil and Italy at the Azteca Stadium, Mill House and Arkle at Cheltenham. Carrowholly will join these pantheons in the coming days. Christy Madigan, who carries the hopes of a multi-specialty health care company, will face Bill Hopkins in what is an eagerly awaited winter league final. Bill, just back from a trip to Scotland, the spiritual home of golf, will enter the final, as the slightest of slight favourites. Now that there are only two teams left, all eight competitors must agree on one thing - there are no prizes for the nearly men in golf; just ask Bobby Clampett.

Murtagh Foursomes 2009

The entry sheet for the 2009 Murtagh Foursomes was posted in the gents’ locker room over the weekend. Of all the club competitions, the Murtagh can be justifiably recognised as the most competitive of all the club matchplays. On the roll of honour since 1994, only one player has ever featured on two winning teams: Pat Kearns. Defending champions Paddy Donohoe and Mick McGovern, along with many others, will be attempting to join Pat this year. Teams are required to prepay their €14 entry fee before signing the entry sheet, as only those teams who have paid will go into the hat on Tuesday April 14. A unique prize is awaiting the winning pair: an engraved silver plate from James Murtagh Jewellers.

Grounds report

Liam Friel has outlined, in a concise report, the strategies and objectives of all work to be undertaken on the course over the next 12 months. The report has been posted in the clubhouse.
