Castlebar man found asleep in middle of road

A 22-year-old Castlebar man who was found lying on his back in the middle of a public road in Castlebar was convicted and fined for being intoxicated in a public place at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.

Thomas Derrig, 25 Rowan Drive, Castlebar, was detected on December 12 2008 at 3.40am lying flat on his back in the middle of a road in the Knockthomas area, where he appeared to be asleep.

Garda Conor Doyle, who found the accused, told the court that the defendant was extremely intoxicated and could barely stand, nor was he able to give his name and address.

Derrig, who was 18 previous public order offences, was convicted and fined €100 by Judge Mary Devins.
