Two Erris rivers open to fishermen

Two rivers in the Erris area are to be opened for fishing in 2018 following a raft of new regulations.

The Minister with responsibility for the Inland Fisheries Sector, Sean Kyne, has approved a suite of regulations and bye-laws that will govern the wild salmon and sea trout fisheries this year.

The new regulations came into effect on Monday last, January 1.

In all, 78 rivers will open for angling activity this year, with 42 fully open and a further 36 on a catch and release basis.

In Erris, the Glenamoy River becomes fully open, while the Shramore river will open on a catch and release basis.

Minister Kyne said: “I had asked Inland Fisheries Ireland to carry out a full review of the catch and release element of fisheries management policy ahead of the 2018 season and this has resulted in an additional 12 rivers open on a catch and release basis which otherwise would have been closed.”
