Belmullet food business ordered to close

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland stated on Thursday that four closure orders and one prohibition order were served on food businesses during the month of February for breaches of food safety legislation pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998, with one of these closures being made in Belmullet.

An order was issued on Nasir Butt by environmental health officers on February 25 for the closure of the 3 in 1 coffee house, fast food and Indian take-away, American Street, Belmullet.

Dr John O’Brien, chief executive, FSAI, expressed his disappointment that it is still proving necessary to exercise these enforcement actions against certain food business operators who are not complying with the law. “Food business operators have a legal obligation to ensure the food they serve is safe for consumption. Every enforcement order undermines consumer confidence in food safety which affects not only the premises involved, but the industry as a whole. The enforcement powers are used when there is, or is likely to be, a risk to public health. Enforcement officers only resort to using these legal powers when standards have fallen so low that consumer health has been put at risk.”
