Linenhall Film Club presents The Grump

Linenhall Film Club will screen the Finnish/Icelandic comedy The Grump on Tuesday April 12 at 8pm.

Dome Karukoski directs this poignant and comical adaptation of Tuomas Kyro's popular novel about an independent and curmudgeonly 80-year-old farmer who reluctantly goes to live in Helsinki at his son’s house for rehabilitation after twisting his ankle, while his mild-mannered son attempts to look after the farm in his absence.

His career oriented daughter-in-law clearly resents his presence and the feeling is mutual, with neither comfortable or overly willing to alter their daily routines. The old man is also out of his comfort zone being surrounded by the trappings of modern urban living. When his entrenched attitudes threaten to derail a business deal being brokered by his daughter-in-law, his presence threatens domestic catastrophe for the household and his son's marriage.

“A touching story about tolerance and closing the generation gap.” - Alissa Simon, Variety.
