McCormack welcomes weed control plans for local lakes

Councillor Eugene McCormack has welcomed the commitment by council management to implement the report in relation to the control of weed growth on Lough Lannagh and Billberry Lough. The commitment came following a motion tabled by Cllr McCormack at last Thursday’s Castlebar Town Council meeting requesting that the report be implemented.

The report “Aquatic plant management recommendations for Billberry and Lannagh Loughs”, was carried out by Dr Joe Caffrey of Inland Fisheries Ireland and details how the extensive weed growth on both lakes can be dealt with on a medium to long term basis.

Cllr McCormack outlined to the meeting that the implementation of the report depended on a co-ordinated effort between the town and county councils together with Inland fisheries Ireland and the Board of Works.

Both lakes are wonderful amenities to the Castlebar and Islandeady areas and every effort should be put into implementing this report, Cllr McCormack said.
