Mayo Symphony Orchestra to perform at the TF Royal Theatre

Wide Open Music and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra present Tasmin Little with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra on tour in Castlebar on December 5 at 8pm at the Royal Theatre. To coincide with this event Mayo Youth Orchestra have been preparing a programme which they will perform with Tasmin Little in a short pre-concert performance at 7.15pm in the Royal Theatre on the night of the RTÉ NSO concert. Over the last number of weeks musicians from the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Fergus Sheil have visited Mayo Youth Orchestra to help coach the young players in preparation for the concert. The pre-concert performance is free and all are welcome to attend.

The Mayo Youth Orchestra was founded in 1997, and under the direction of Anne Moriarty has gone from strength to strength. The age profile ranges from national to secondary school and members come from all over the county including Castlebar, Westport, Killala, Kiltimagh, Foxford, Straide, Claremorris, and Ballyhaunis.

Music Generation Mayo has provided this opportunity for young musicians in Mayo Youth Orchestra to engage and work with professional musicians from the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. Such opportunities are intrinsic to the ethos of Music Generation Mayo and a commitment to provide learning and performance opportunities for young musicians in the county.

RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and Tasmin Little’s programme includes the luscious sounds of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No 1, one of the most romantic violin concertos of all time, Danzón No 2 the infectious Latin American symphonic dance from Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, the hell-raising dance of King Kastchei from Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, and dance with the elderly Chairman Mao, in music inspired by John Adams’ opera Nixon in China. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear the 60-piece RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in Mayo. Tickets for the concert are available at 094 902 3111 or www.theroyal.ie and are priced €18.15 and €16.15 (with concession ) or €60 for a family (two adults and two children ).
