Sunday next is President’s Day and a large turnout is expected to battle for Freddie Devanney’s prize. The ladies are also involved on Sunday with a nine-hole stableford competition teeing off at 3.30pm.

Colin Cooney and Eugene Patten are the first pairing through to the semi-final of the club match play fourball, sponsored by Golfstyle, Galway.

The Connaught Shield team recorded a narrow hard fought 3-2 victory over Swinford and now face Ballinrobe in the Zone semi-final on Monday next.

Introduction to golf evenings will commence on Thursday August 15 and run for four consecutive Thursdays between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. Clubs, if necessary, will be supplied. There is no charge and club members will be available to offer tuition, friendly advice, and accompany beginners for a few holes.

Claremorris Golf Club will host its open week from Monday August 12 to Friday August 15. The fee is just €8 for members and visitors alike. On Saturday August 16 the club will host four Scratch Cups - senior, junior, intermediate, and minor. The fee is €20 for all Scratch Cup entries.

Westport Golf Club

Time to Swing into Summer. Westport Golf Club will be hosting a junior golf camp from Monday August 12 to Thursday August 15. The camp will run from 10am to 1pm daily. The cost is €55 per student. The programme will be delivered by PGA professionals Todd O'Reilly (098 28262 ) and Aidan Moran (086 865 2172 ). Equipment will be available on the day.
