St Patrick’s weekend sees big turn out around the county

Balla

Last weekend was a stroke play competition which will count towards the Golfer of the Year award. In the men’s section, Ray Mannion won on 53pts, with Vinny Gibbons second, Bernie O’Connor third, and PJ Brett the gross winner. The ladies’ competition was won by Rose O’Connor on 52pts, Breege Jennings was second, Patricia Conwell third, and Geraldine O’Malley the gross winner.

Ballina

On St Patrick’s Day, Gav’s Menswear sponsored the 17 hole competition with Keith Cronin taking the win and Denis Bourke claiming second place with John Bourke finishing third. This Sunday will be captains’ Drive Off Day and Bourke, Carrig and Loftus Solicitors will be sponsoring the18 hole single stableford competition. The club will once again be running its popular The Masters Challenge Sweep in conjunction with the Masters' at Augusta over Easter Weekend. Further details in clubhouse or from committee.

Ballinrobe

Over the St Patrick’s weekend, Eddie Burke won the gents’ competition on a score of 41pts with Noel Gavin finishing in second place and Matthew Burke coming home in third. The gross prize went to Darren Egan. The ladies’ competition was claimed by Angela Flaherty, Anne Galvin came home in second place, and Louise Cribben took third place. The Headford team were also winners over the weekend taking home the Ciara McHugh Parish Cup on a score of 255pts.

Claremorris

Last weekend’s bank holiday competition was won by Eamon Doherty on a score of 44pts with Sean McGuinness finishing just behind him in second place also on a score of 44pts. The category competition was won by category four player Conor McGuinness on 43pts.

Swinford

Last Sunday’s nine hole stableford competition was won by Jimmy O’Donnell. The Spring League is being led by the team of Eamon Byrne, Vinny Murtagh, and Gary McNeela on a score of 29pts at present. The final round of the spring league is scheduled for this coming Sunday.

A nail-biting finish in last weekend’s ladies’ team competition resulted in a play-off with a win for the team of Patricia Feeney, Bernie Wash, and Mary Horkan, with 37pts. In second place was the team of Julie Loftus, Adrienne Ring, and Dympna O'Donnell. In third place was the team of Catherine Loftus, Carmel Timoney, and Margaret Sweeney.

Mulranny

The first Golfer of the Year competition takes place on Sunday March 24 and the prize is a free golf subscription for 2014. The competition is open to ladies and gents. Draw information will be available by contacting the clubhouse at 098 36262 on Saturday. Membership must be paid before taking part in Sunday’s competition.

Westport

The gents’ Winter League final takes place over the next Bank Holiday weekend. Liam Friel's team will face Sean Fitzgerald's side in the decider. Sean Fitzgerald’s team will go into the encounter as slight favourites only on the basis that Liam Friel’s side although having a record number of final wins also has the record for final defeats.

There will be daily open competitions taking place over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. Details of entry fees and competition formats will appear in next week’s notices.
