Ruane calls for reversal of rent supplement cuts

Sinn Féin Councillor Thérèse Ruane, is calling for a reversal of the rent supplement cuts introduced by the Government in the last budget. She insists that people in rental accommodation in Mayo face eviction as a result of these new lower thresholds.

Cllr Thérèse Ruane stated: “I have been inundated with calls from people who are in a very distressed state and simply at their wits end. They have tried to negotiate with their landlords to reduce their rent and been refused. They have been searching for alternative accommodation and cannot find anything affordable and within the rent thresholds. It is simply an impossibility as the new lower rents thresholds don't match the asking prices for rental accommodation in the private sector.

“I am appealing to the Minister, Joan Burton, to reverse these cruel cuts to rent supplement. I am calling on the six government Oireachtas members here in Mayo to lobby to bring about a reversal to these cruel measures that are having a devastating impact on individuals and families right across Mayo.”
