Crime in Westport has reduced in past year

There has been a decrease in crime committed in Westport over the past year, Superintendent Mick Murray revealed at the town’s Joint Policing Committee on Monday.

The superintendent said that in comparison to this time last year that incidents reported are down 32 per cent, and criminal activity has been reduced “due to the absence of a few who normally are quite busy with crime”, as in “the last 12 months repeat offenders have had their fair say in court.”

According to Supt Murray, section three assault is down 18 per cent, minor assaults are down 41 per cent, criminal damage is down 44 per cent, burglary is down over 30 per cent, and general theft is down 51 per cent.
