Kenny gets reassurance on Castlebar mental health services

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny TD has received assurances from the HSE that specialist mental health services in Castlebar will be adequately met with supports in place to meet the social needs of those concerned. This follows the closure of the Psychiatric Day Centre which operated for many years at the Sacred Heart Hospital. The service provided there was specialist and of great personal importance to those who attended.

Now however, Dr Dominic Fannon, consultant psychiatrist at the HSE, has confirmed his satisfaction that an adequate and satisfactory system is being put in place together with the necessary undertakings given by the management of Mayo Mental Health Services to deal with the group of people who previously attended at the Sacred Heart Hospital.

“This is always a sensitive situation and I am a big supporter of proper mental health services being available,” Dep Kenny said. “Community supports are of critical importance to families involved and people directly affected by these services. Dr Fannon’s letter confirms his belief that an adequate service will continue to be provided. The proof will be judged in the quality of the service being provided over time. I do hope that it will measure up and I will follow up in due course to see that this happens.”
