Castlebar Town Council reaches out to people of Haiti

Sinn Féin Councillor Thérèse Ruane has welcomed the backing of Castlebar Town Council for her motion to reach out to the people of Haiti by making a donation to the Trócaire Haiti Earthquake Appeal. “This sends out a strong message of support and empathy to the people of Haiti who need our help to get through this very difficult time,” Cllr Ruane said.

“The people of Haiti are really suffering as they have been hit by the worst earthquake in 200 years, causing devastation and killing thousands of people. The people of Haiti have proven to be brave and resilient throughout recent years of natural disasters and political instability. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and is totally ill equipped to respond effectively to this crisis,” Cllr Ruane explained.

“The immediate priority in Haiti is to save as many lives as possible by rescuing trapped survivors. After that the focus will be providing survivors the shelter, food and cooking equipment they need. Homes, schools, shops and businesses have collapsed in Port-au-prince where over two million people live. Haiti has little resources to deal with this crisis and needs the immediate support of the international community.”

Cllr Ruane said she felt really strongly that Castlebar Town Council should show leadership and example and reach out to the people of Haiti who need support and help during this difficult time. “I really appreciate the unanimous support of councillors when a decision was made to donate €1000 to the Trócaire Haiti Earthquake Appeal. I hope that this meaningful gesture will encourage other councils, organisations, and individuals throughout the country to do likewise.”
