Bogus fundraiser alert

It has been brought to the attention of Barnardos children’s charity that a small number of bogus fundraisers have been operating in various locations in the country, including Mayo. The people concerned have been collecting door to door in residential and commercial areas claiming they are collecting money on behalf of Barnardos for a sponsored walk.

Barnardos advises members of the public that it does not encourage fundraisers to collect door to door. If members of the public are unsure as to whether the fundraiser is legitimate, Barnardos advises them to ask for identification and a letter of authentication which is provided by Barnardos to genuine fundraisers. They are also encouraged to contact Barnardos on 1850 222300 where the Barnardos fundraising team holds a list of active fundraisers who have registered with the charity. In addition, any on-street collectors should have a Garda permit from their local gardaí. The children’s charity is asking for people who notice suspicious activity to report it to their local gardaí and to Barnardos.
