Spring cleaning — tips to help declutter the house

Thu, Mar 09, 2017

Spring has arrived, the days are getting brighter and for many of us, it is a time to get the house in order after the winter months. De-cluttering is the best way to cut down on mess and get your home looking organised, tidy and clean. However, if like me you are a bit of a hoarder, a good tip is to think, do I need this or is it useful for me or my family now? And if not, consider recycling it by selling it, sending it the charity shop, yard sale or bin!

The world on your plate at One World Tapestry

Thu, Mar 09, 2017

Asylum seekers and their children have spent years living in an institutional setting that was designed as a short-term solution. They are accommodated by the State in residential institutions, under a reception system known as Direct Provision. Direct Provision is intended to provide for the welfare of asylum seekers and their families as they await decisions on their asylum application. It ‘directly provides’ essential services, medical care, accommodation, and board with three meals a day provided at set times. When the the system was established in 2000, it was described as an interim solution to the high numbers of asylum seekers entering the State in search of protection, and the growing concerns about the risk of homelessness for that population. More than 15 years later, little has changed in the physical conditions, supports, or treatment of asylum seekers while they remain in these centres.

Let Spring in Galway re-awaken and re-energise you

Thu, Mar 09, 2017

The sun rises up over the bay and lights up the greenery of a city that is this year setting out on its quest to be one of the greenest there is, by appreciating its parks and woodlands and things natural. It's Springtime and suddenly, wintertime and al its associated miserable weather is left behind. There is simply no place better to enjoy Spring than here in Galway, the city and county. It was as if the place was made for the kind of light that falls on the west.

Everybody is energised and ready for the year ahead, because the Galway year is like that, a set series of events and happenings that in their own way frame the seasons for the city. Galway has always been a coming together of ideals and imperfections, a pot pourri of dreams and ambitions and realities that when chucked into the blender along with a few accordions and organic vegetables creates a sense of a city that attracts people from far and wide. And whatever essence this sense of a city lets off, it is a magical elixir that defines us all as being players in a city with a unique identity.
