Claddagh Jewellers mural removed despite final stages 2020 bid

Councillor Pearce Flannery is hoping to work out new guidelines that will forbid the removal of creative murals on the city's buildings.

Last Monday, at a city council meeting, the councillor voiced his bemusement after the beanstalk mural above the Claddagh Jewellers, Mainguard Street, was removed during such an important period for Galway.

With less than 10 days until the winner of the European Capital of Culture 2020 is announced, Cllr Flannery believed the people of Galway were being left with "an eyesore", as opposed to a thing of beauty.

He also questioned the decision making involved in the mural's disappearance, saying, "we need to examine ourselves after such a ridiculous decision."

Planners were concerned the mural failed to replicate the tone of the city centre buildings, and painted over the mural, leaving a large empty blue space in its wake.

Cllr Niall McNelis said the city planners' undertaking was excessive.
