One of Galway’s oldest traditional butcher shops closes its doors

Feericks Victuallers, a traditional butcher shop on 40 Lower Newcastle Road, is getting ready to close its doors for the final time after more than 40 years in business.

Owner Thomas Feerick began his career in the industry as a apprentice butcher in James Kirwans on Mainguard Street in November 1963. The following March, he spotted an opportunity and opened his own butcher shop in Newcastle, on the site which now houses the AIB building at the entrance to NUI Galway. In 1984, Mr Feerick moved across the road where he has traded ever since. The shop will close its doors for the final time on Saturday January 30.

Ray Gannon joined the business in March 1977, and Ray has been the resident butcher there with Thomas ever since. In a time of constant change when there is a higher than ever turnover of businesses, the traditional butchers has remained a recognisable symbol of old Newcastle. Nestled between the university and the hospital, the shop has been serving generations of locals and students, as well as being a popular choice for hospital staff. Perhaps the butcher’s most famous client was President Michael D Higgins who staff remember visiting during his time at the university.

Thomas Feerick has paid tribute to all who supported him during his 40 year tenure in the heart of Newcastle. “On behalf of myself and Ray we would like to sincerely thank our valued customers for their support and loyalty over the years. It has been a pleasure serving them.”

Thomas Feerick is now looking forward to a relaxing retirement while Ray Gannon will continue working, and is looking forward to taking up a position at the traditional butchers section of Mortons of Galway in Lower Salthill on February 9.
