Great value food in Galway
Last week I asked restaurants to send me an e-mail about any special offers or particularly good value meals available. Coincidentally there were some offers advertised in the same issue and I will list below what is available.
Mulberry Restaurant, Barna, has an ‘early bird’ menu from Sunday to Thursday which costs €19.95 for a two course meal and €23.95 for a three course meal. Mulberry also offers a daily €10 pasta dish and a 20 per cent discount for take-away orders. A sample three course meal would be fish cake with jalapeno relish to start, beer battered fish, and chips, followed by chocolate fondant. Contact number (091) 592123.
The Westwood House Hotel, Dangan, is offering an ‘early bird’ menu for €59. This includes a bottle of wine and a meal for two including rabbit terrine for starters, steak main courses, and sticky toffee pudding plus tea and coffee. Telephone (091) 521442.
The Malt House, High Street, is offering a two course dinner for €25 and a three course meal for €30, Tuesday to Friday from 6pm to 9.30pm. Telephone (091) 567866.
Cava Restaurant, Dominick Street, has lunch specials such as soup and sandwiches for €10, scone and tea/coffee for €3, paella of the day plus a glass of wine for €15. Telephone (091) 539884.
Mustard Restaurant has just moved to new premises in the Bridge Mills and is offering two main courses for the price of one until the end of February. Voucher available in last week’s Galway Advertiser. Telephone (091) 566400.
Rodeo Restaurant, Quay Street, is offering an all day mini breakfast for €5 including tea/coffee, and a 6oz steak burger with home made chips and side salad for €7.50.
The g Hotel, Wellpark, is offering a two course meal plus a trip to the adjacent Eye cinema to watch the film Bride Wars. The meal is available in the lounge bar areas and a sample set of dishes would be: Smoked chicken Caesar salad, homemade tagliatelle in a wild mushroom sauce, and a dessert of whiskey and apple custard mousse. Oscar’s Restaurant, Dominick Street, has a 1/2lb burger made with prime Hereford beef, Killeen Galway farmhouse cheese, Stephen Gould’s best organic greens, fresh cut homemade chips, and homemade pickles and ketchup — sounds mouth-watering — all for the princely sum of €12.50. When a chef like Michael O’Meara can use the best local ingredients to present such good value you have the best of both worlds, great food and great value.
I am sure that most restaurants with good value meals hope that the customer will spend a few more euros on a glass, or a bottle, of wine, but if you are on a strict budget there is good value out there, just be strict with yourself and you can have a great night without breaking the bank.
Lastly, I called in to see the new Brannagan’s Restaurant at Quay Lane. It was buzzing with happy diners. Ken Bergin, formerly of St Cleran’s Country House Hotel in Craughwell, is the maître d’ and I look forward to sampling some of their dishes at a later date. Brannagan’s will launch an early bird menu this weekend; it will be a two course meal for €20 and available Tuesday to Thursday from 6pm to 8pm, running until the end of February. If you are wondering where Quay Lane is, it is facing the Spanish Arch and where Cobwebs is located.
