Discover the working life of hookers, nobbies and zulus

The working boats which could be seen in Galway in the 19th century will be the subject of a public lecture this weekend.

The Galway City Museum will host the talk Hookers, Nobbies & Zulus, this Saturday at 2pm, which will be given by Cóilín Ó hIarnáin.

While the hooker has long dominated Galway Bay, it was not the only boat at work on the seas off the city in the 1800s. In the late 19th century the Congested Districts Board introduced large, decked boats, powered by sail, such as the Scottish Zulu and the Manx Nobby, which had proved themselves in English and Scottish waters.

The talk is suitable for those aged 12 and over and admission is free.

Places must be booked in advance through 091 - 532460.
