Public lecture on building castles in Connacht

Galway Advertiser,

The west of Ireland contains most of the country’s mediaeval castles, some built by the Irish, but most were constructed by the Normans.

This subject will be explored at an upcoming public lecture from The Galway Archaeological and Historical Society.

The talk, entitled Connacht incastellated: pre-Norman and Anglo-Norman castles west of the Shannon, will be given by Prof Tadhg O’Keeffe, in the Harbour Hotel, Dock Road, on Monday December 9 at 8pm. It will look at the linguistic, historical, and archaeological evidence for the building of such structures.

Prof O’Keeffe is Head of UCD School of Archaeology. One of Ireland’s best-known medievalists, he has published five books and nearly 100 papers on aspects of mediaeval archaeology and history.

All are welcome to the lecture.
