The denim dilemma

No wardrobe should be without a good pair of jeans. Whether you prefer a skinny, a wide leg, or a boyfriend cut, jeans are a great staple, especially for the summer (if we ever get one ). No matter what way you style them, they are the go-to piece, the old reliable, the never-let-you-down piece. My favourite outfit has always been a pair of dark denim skinny jeans, a white T-shirt, and a blazer, accessorised with scarves and lots of jewellery. It is chic and effortless, and most importantly, classic. Jeans are not always driven by trends, it is about fit and comfort in whatever style works for you. I have talked about denim before, but this time, it is about creating great outfits for the sun, or the rain.

Get casual

Last week, Awear launched a very exciting new denim campaign which can be seen in its shop windows. The campaign showcases the great selection of styles in store, and online, with some very cute names like the Lara and my favourite, the Nora (pictured, not a skinny, but not a straight leg either ). These two styles in particular are great for a casual look, and if you opt for a dark denim, bright primary colours work best with jackets and jumpers. Try these styles with a three-quarter length jacket (yellow wool crepe coat, Miu Miu at Brown Thomas, €1,260 ) or a leather jacket (red leather PU jacket, Carraig Donn, €74.95 ) for a really smart casual look (works very well for casual Friday too ) and will brighten up even the rainiest of days. And don’t forget the umbrella!

Getting glam

My preference on a night out is always a pair of jeans which I can style up lots of different ways for every occasion. Let’s take a skinny jean in a light wash denim as an example. For summer nights out, I really like to wear this colour wash with navy (blazer, yumidirect.co.uk ); the two shades just balance each other out very elegantly. Navy is a really versatile colour too, and works with seasonal shades like coral and cobalt blue. As well as that, light citrus colours create a fresh summer look with a lighter denim. Match these up with some stilettos (the shoe style of the season ) and a little clutch bag, and you are ready to tear up the dance floor.

And not to forget when the sun comes out

And if you are heading to the sunshine this summer, to escape the rain that seems not to want to leave our shores, then perhaps a hot trend to take with you is a pair of denim shorts. Penney’s has a great selection to choose from at just €15.
