GMIT film students showcase their work

Final year students of GMIT’s film and television BA degree will screen their work to a selected audience at the EYE cinema today.
Work shown will include a selection of short documentary and feature films by 29 students on a wide range of topics.
The screening will be opened by IFTA award winner and former GMIT lecturer, Lelia Doolan. Ms Doolan was a recent winner of the George Morrison Feature Documentary Award at the Irish Film and Television Awards for her documentary, Bernadette: Notes on a Political Journey.
Some short films that will appear include Oddity, which tells the story of a young gay boy about to come out to his parents, Abjection, in which a single mother searches for companionship, and The Betrayal, which documents the sinister consequences of a doomed friendship.
Documentaries include The Shed, which explores the difficulties of intercommunication between men, In Alone, about loneliness, and Sacred, which focuses on Fort Hill cemetery as a place of both beauty and sadness.
Another entry, No 1, which shows a place of silence, beauty and grace in an ever-changing world, has been shortlisted for ‘Best Short Documentary’ at the upcoming Galway Film Fleadh.
Celine Curtin, chair of the GMIT film and television programme, said she is delighted that No 1 has been shortlisted for the Fleadh and that the graduates’ work was of a very high standard.
“These screenings are seen as a public celebration of the work, time and effort put into the student projects during their graduate year,” she said. “We are very hopeful that this year’s graduates will be successful in securing work in their chosen field as, despite the downturn in the economy, the audio-visual industry continues to flourish.”
Documentary tutor at GMIT, Donal Haughey, said that the students’ work was of a high quality.
“I’m delighted with the quality of this year’s projects and we look forward to seeing everyone and hope they enjoy the screenings,” he said.
