Female artists and contemporary artists will be celebrated in two new exhibitions which will be opened next week in the Galway City Museum.
Female Artists of the Twentieth Century and 21st Century Icons will be officially launched this Monday at 6pm. The exhibitions come from The Niland Collection, The Model in Sligo, and the National Craft Gallery in Kilkenny.
Female Artists of the Twentieth Century will feature artists like Mainie Jellet and Mary Swanzy, who were central figures in the Modern Art movement in Ireland as well as works by Dorothy Cross, Kathy Prendergast, Alice Maher, Constance Gore-Booth, Estella Solomons, and Nano Reid.
21st Century Icons looks at the bronze and golden neckwear of the Celts, known as the torc, and allows various artists and craftspeople to produce modern, torc influenced designs. The exhibition is curated by Anne Mulrooney.
