How to choose the best trench coat for your shape

nvented in 1901 by Thomas Burberry, the trench coat is a stylish cover up for autumn days. From dark sophistication to light feminine hues, the trench is the perfect wardrobe staple to wear by day over your jeans and T-shirt or by night over your dress. But getting it right is often more difficult than it seems. So, how to choose your perfect trench coat for your shape.

The length is the key to look your best in a trench. If you are petite, make sure the length is above your knees and the collar not to wide or it will make you look shorter.

For women of average height, a knee length or just above the knee length is best. Always wear heels with your trench to elongate your body.

Tall women can get away with longer length (below the knee ) but it will not look good if the coat is too short. Make sure the sleeves are long enough.

Double or single breasted?

Single breasted will suit most shapes, especially petite frames and top heavy women. Double breasted is best on tall and slim women. In all cases, make sure it fits. The trench should not pull across your breasts when it is buttoned. Wearing your coat open can also make you look taller and slimmer. Tighten the belt at the back of the coat to keep it elegant.

Choosing the right colour

Choose a colour that will flatter your skin tone. The right colour should make your face glow. Try on several different coats in different colours. A neutral colour such as navy, beige, or khaki is practical and will match the rest of your wardrobe. Plum, red, teal, or patterns such as checks are also a great option.

So many looks can be created with a trench. For a simple day look, throw on a pair of denims, a jumper, and leave the coat open. Finish off with a coloured scarf. For office chic, pair it with a pencil skirt, a dressy blouse, and court shoes.

Use contrasting textures to add interest to your look. A trench in a stiff material will look great with a wool dress and a pair of boots.
