NUI Galway to sponsor US/Ireland legal symposium

Gillian Buckley of the Western Development Commission (WDC ) toyesterday announced NUI Galway as main sponsor of the inaugural U.S./Ireland Legal Symposium. The high profile event takes place in Knockranny House Hotel, Westport, Co Mayo from 11-13 May and offers an outstanding line up of speakers. Taoiseach Enda Kenny is guest speaker at the Gala Dinner. The event is chaired by Deirdre Somers, Chief Executive of the Irish Stock Exchange (ISE ) and speakers include Mr. Justice Peter Kelly of the Commercial Court and Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor of the Ohio Supreme Court.

This international Symposium will be hosted by the Brehon Law Society of Philadelphia and is supported by the Western Development Commission (WDC ), Mayo County Council and Temple University Beasley School of Law in Philadelphia. Announcing the sponsorship, NUI Galway President Dr James J. Browne said:

Speaking at the launch, Gillian Buckley of the WDC said, “This symposium will showcase the West of Ireland as a great place to Live, Work and Do Business. The West of Ireland is already home to some of the leading US multinationals as well as smaller US enterprises demonstrating the benefits of our region’s location as a gateway for US companies seeking to establish or expand their presence into Europe and beyond. The US market is a key market for Irish businesses and the symposium seeks to generate a greater understanding of the commercial and legal issues facing US and European companies operating in each other’s territories”

This event qualifies for 9.5 general CPD hours. Attendees will include Irish and American lawyers, business consultants and businesses operating in Ireland, the United States and the United Kingdom. Delegates will also include representatives from the banking and financial services sector, accountants and tax professionals, venture capitalists, state bodies, government departments and local authorities.

Sessions include corporate law and distressed debt acquisitions, key tax issues, employment law, commercial litigation, alternative dispute resolution, government relations, corporate governance, intellectual property law and accessing capital. The focus is strongly on interaction and networking.

The WDC is the key instigator in bringing this Symposium to the West of Ireland. It is supported by Mayo County Council in this initiative which dovetails with Government plans for trade, tourism and investment.
