Asian Tea House going for national glory in Irish Restaurant Awards

Galway Advertiser, April 21, 2011.

The Asian Tea House in Mary Street in Galway City was acknowledged this month as the top restaurant in Galway city and county in the Santa Rita Irish Restaurant Awards. The restaurant will now compete for the Regional and All- Ireland title which will be announced at the Irish Restaurant Awards in the Burlington Hotel Dublin on Wednesday May 25.. “We are delighted to be recognised by these awards,” says Terry Commons, proprietor of the Asian Tea House, which celebrated its third birthday last Sunday.

“Despite the challenges of the current climate, we have stuck to our core ethos and ensured that the quality of our food was always supreme, and this has been appreciated by our loyal customer base and acknowledged by the Irish Restaurant Awards”.

Loosely based on the ancient Chinese Tea House concept, the Asian Tea House was opened by Terry Commons and his head chef and co-proprietor Alan Wong in 2008. The appealing Pan Asian restaurant features an extensive menu representative of Malay, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese and Chinese cuisine, with a large range of dishes, all of which are MSG free, cooked to order and based mainly on locally sourced ingredients.

“We source most of our ingredients from the local producers, ensuring the finest and freshest of ingredients are used to produce seasonal, innovative dishes every evening in the restaurant” says Alan Wong, head chef and co-owner.

“All our meat, fish and vegetables are sourced locally. The varied range of taste within Asian dishes is extensive, therefore we must import certain ingredients ourselves from Asia," Mr Wong explains.

In addition to a full a la carte menu which is available every evening from Monday through Sunday (5-10.30pm) the Asian Tea House also features two other menus; a take away menu available nightly and a mid week special menu. Available from 5-10.30pm Monday to Thursday, The Asian Tea House special menu has been hugely successful, providing a main course of varied and heavenly food with a glass of wine for an irresistible price of €14.95. The Asian Tea House is closed on Tuesdays.
