Painting, performance, and workshops at Coole Park
By Richie Mccarthy
The Coole Park Winter Programme of events continues tomorrow from 8pm to 9pm when Athenry Drama Group perform two Lady Gregory one-act plays: The Workhouse Ward and Dave. Athenry Drama group is more than 100 years in existence, having performed on the local and national circuit it has had many successes with several renowned plays.
The Workhouse Ward portrays the argumentative but close relationship of two old men living in an Irish workhouse. When one of them is offered a place to live with a relative, he chooses to remain in the workhouse rather than be separated from his friend. Dave is a one-act play about a manservant called Dave with mystical dreams, written in Lady Gregory's own invented Kiltartan dialect.
On Thursday December 3 from 8pm to 9pm there will be creative writing readings with Michael O’Loughlin and students from Gort Community School. O’Loughlin, writer in residence with Galway City and County Councils, presents the results of creative writing workshops in association with participating students from Gort Community School. The workshops focused on the area's great literary and cultural heritage and aim to bring the students into a new relationship to Coole Park and Yeats.
