Gort charity lends helping hand in flood crisis

As rising water levels threatens areas in Gort a local charity shop has opened its doors to the tide of people who have found themselves in need of extra clothing, furniture, and other essentials as a result of the floods.
It is not just the recent unprecedented flooding that has prompted the volunteers at Mrs Quinn Charity Shop for the blind to extend their assistance but also the devastating effects of the economic recession.
The hard-working volunteers are currently facing an uphill struggle to keep up with demand for their assistance and stock is running low. They are now calling for generous members of the public to bring any spare clothing and other items to the shop where the diligent volunteers will ensure that they go to people who really need it.
One volunteer told the Galway Advertiser that the shop is trying to serve the community by helping those affected by the recent flooding or by the financial pressure brought on by the recession. There has been an increase in people coming into the shop seeking help in the form of warm clothes, toys, or furniture. The volunteers try to help by giving a bag full of clothes or other items for just a few euro. The shop can also act as a go-between for a person looking to offer larger items such as furniture. The service, which is completely confidential, ensures that a person in need can get in contact through the shop with the donor.
“People affected by the flooding can come in quietly and we’ll help them confidentially. We’re available to anyone in the county and across in Ennis, Clare. People who want to help but don’t know how can give us their number and address and we can pass it on, confidentially. We’re also looking for extra volunteers to help out in the run up to Christmas,” said the volunteer.
