Wireless phone service problems in Connemara ‘resolved’ say Eircom

Problems with interference to the wireless phone service in a number of areas in Connemara, particularly in Kylemore and Seanaphestin, have now been resolved according to Eircom.
The wireless service is commonly used in remote areas to supply services. Some 100 users were experiencing difficulties with their phone service. This was linked to interference when other users were accessing internet access also by a wireless supply.
The problem was also compounded as mobile phone coverage is also very poor in these areas.
Eircom has now fitted new software to a number of exchanges and this has rectified the problem. The company has contacted some 100 customers to inform them that the issue has been resolved and it has also offered credit to compensate for the poor supply over the last six months.
The news has been welcomed by Independent councillor Thomas Welby.
“I am happy to have been able to assist in the resolution of problem,” he said. “It was causing extreme anxiety to some elderly people living alone as the telephone is their only way to contact family or neighbours. This problem was also impacting on some of the business community who are totally dependent on a telephone service.”
