Galway TDs seek meeting with Minister Gormley for go ahead for sewerage schemes

Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish and Fianna Fáil Galway East TD Michael Kitt will meet Minister Gormley on Tuesday November 3 to convince him to give the go ahead to the Claregalway and Milltown sewerage schemes.

The contracts and the design build operate documents for the Claregalway sewerage scheme were sent to the Department of Environment by the Galway County Council in December 2008. The documents for the Milltown scheme are also with the Minister. Both are being packaged as one contract document within the Department of the Environment.

Deputies Grealish and Kitt are anxious to see work on the projects begin soon.

“The Milltown Scheme will cost less than €2 million to build and both of these projects need to commence as quickly as possible to meet the needs of Milltown and Claregalway’s growing population,” said Dep Grealish. “The new Claregalway scheme will transform the current sewerage management system into a more efficient, environmentally friendly, operation that will reduce pollution and enhance water quality in the area.”

According to Dep Kitt, the system in Claregalway uses eight independent treatment plants. Under the new scheme these eight plants will be decommissioned and one central scheme will service the whole area.

“These schemes will more than adequately meet the needs of Claregalway and Milltown both now and in the future,” he said. “We are hopeful that there will be positive news on their commencement following our meeting with the Minister.”
