Win VIP tickets to the Saw Doctors’ midnight gig at Zhivago
Be one of the lucky 75 to witness this late night intimate gig
Friends in high places — the Saw Doctor-ed version of the famous Charles Ebbets photo.
To mark the launch of the Best Of The Saw Doctors CD later this month, the band are to play a special once-off midnight gig in Zhivago Records.
And 75 of the Galway Advertiser readers will be there, courtesy of this great free e-mail only competition.
The album, featuring the band’s greatest hits, will also be notable for the cover photo which is a (Saw) doctored version of the iconic photograph of skyscrape workers in New York in the 1930s.
The photo taken by legendary photographer Charles Ebbets is one of the best-known images in the history of photography and it hit the news again two years ago when it was confirmed that two of the men featured in the photo were from South Galway and were not Italian immigrants as had previously been thought.
With the Galway link confirmed, The Saw Doctors contacted Mr Ebbets’ daughter Tami and she gave permission for the photo to be altered and used for the album cover.
The new version features the band atop the girder with Davy Carton pictured wearing a Tommy K tee-shirt and reading a copy of the Tuam Herald — the newspaper that first documented their rise in the 1980s.
Tommy K was a well-known disc jockey in Tuam whose impact on Tuam music has been featured in several Saw Doctor songs.
It was Leo Moran's idea to use the New York Skyline image - also it was his idea to have Davy reading the Tuam Herald while eating his lunch up on the steel girder outside the Rockerfeller Centre in NYC.
The Saw Doctors are due to appear on The Late Late Show on Friday October 23 to launch the new CD which is officially entitled To Win Just Once.. The Best of The Saw Doctors.
To mark the occasion of the release of The Best of The Saw Doctors, Zhivago Records in Shop Street will open at Midnight on Thursday October 22 and The Saw Doctors will play a live gig in the store as well as signing copies of
The Best Of ...CD.
