Refurbished mental health facility opens in Portumna

A newly refurbished community mental health facility in Portumna was officially opened by Minister for Equality, Disability and Mental Health John Moloney recently.

Speaking at the opening of the Alor Star Adrian Ahern, acting general manager, HSE Galway said the health authority is committed to the development of an integrated, community based mental health service.

“These services have seen dramatic changes and developments in the last 20 years. These changes continue as we move from the hospital model to providing more care in communities and in clients’ own homes. As part of this process over the last number of years clients have been transferred from the hospital setting in St Brigid’s Hospital Ballinasloe, and moved to community residences.

“Here in Portumna, it was felt that a facility was necessary to allow clients participate in daily activities which would promote independent living skills, together with providing therapies, supports and educational services. Our aim is to provide an environment which allows our clients regain control of their particular living situation from a psychological, social and biological perspective.”

Brian O’Malley, assistant director of nursing, HSE east Galway mental health service said 31 clients attend the facility with an average of 15 attending daily.

“We believe the services and facilities available to our clients here are an essential part of how their condition is managed. They have access to health professionals such as a psychologist, a social worker, a homecare co-ordinator and occupational therapist and nursing staff. The centre provides an activities’ room, a computer training area and an area where our clients can relax.”

He outlined staff arrange a variety of training and activities for clients. Programmes include computer training, creative writing, social skills, budgetary skills, health and fitness, and horticulture.

“It is a testament to the commitment of both clients and staff that to date, 14 clients have received FETAC certification in drama, computer literacy, horticulture and communications. Individual counselling is available at the facility for all clients. Social outings are arranged regularly and the trips taken to date include visits to Knock and Achill, and a number of clients have visited Lourdes.”
