A novel and exciting fundraiser in aid of the West of Ireland Alzheimer’s Foundation was organised at the weekend by the Connemara Coast Hotel Coast Club.
This inaugural coastathon saw participants undertake three different disciplines, swimming, running, and rowing at the same time.
Due to the inclement weather and difficult swimming conditions the swimmers abandoned plans to swim from Ballyvaughan across Galway Bay to Furbo and opted instead for a swim from Spiddal to Furbo. Simultaneously, at the Coast Club Leisure Centre, 10 runners and 10 rowers in relays covered a 62km distance endurance test – the combined efforts dubbed a “coastathon”.
The day culminated with a barbecue for the participants, supporters, and sponsors - BDS Vending, BWG, Connemara Coast Hotel, Curleys, Galway Bay Seafoods, Ian King, Jimmy Keady & Co, Pallas Foods, McGeoughs Connemara Fine Foods, RNLI, and Slemons Ollmhargadh na bhForbacha. All donations were donated directly to the West of Ireland Alzheimer’s Foundation in their continuing aim to provide a complete service of care to sufferers affected by dementia and their families in the western region of Ireland.
